All children, regardless of age, sex, race, ethnicity, cultural identity, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation or ability, may be vulnerable to violence. Unfortunately, violence against children often remains hidden.
Violence against older persons has remained a largely hidden issue, with untold social and economic costs.
During 2005-2006, there were 1,125 admissions of women and dependent children to shelters in Newfoundland and Labrador. Approximately 89% of women residing in shelters are victims to violence.
The factors that make persons with disabilities more susceptible to abuse are often the very same that cause a person to refrain from reporting violence.
